4 Steps to Healthy, Radiant Skin- The Natural Way! (Sensitive Skin Approved!)

Did you know that your skin is actually your body’s largest organ? This is often overlooked, but stresses just how important it is to take care of our skin. Often times, what pops up on our skin is an indicator of what’s going on beneath the surface.

For example, breaking out around your mouth and jawline symbolizes hormonal imbalances, while breaking out on your forehead indicates stress. Even on your body- a rash could indicate that your immune system is reacting to something that your body did not like (think allergic reaction) or small bumps on your upper arms could indicate that you’re low on your B vitamins.

These are just a few examples of how your skin works as a guide to tell you what’s going on with your body. You can find a face map HERE which shows you what breakouts can indicate within your body, so you can begin healing from the inside out. Let’s face it (see what I did there? HA, I had to do it), if you’re only healing the surface but not taking care of the root of the problem, it will keep resurfacing until you do. This applies to pretty much everything in life and I feel is a big lesson to be learned, but we’ll save that topic for another day…

This isn’t to say that fixing the root of the problem means you don’t need to take care of the surface anymore. You wouldn’t clean out and vacuum your car but leave the outside dirty and dusty, right? This is just saying that once you take care of your body and the root of the problem, skincare routines become more of a “quick maintenance” rather than something that takes up all your time, energy, and money.

When looking for a skincare routine that works, you may come across hundreds, if not thousands, of articles that say something along the lines of “THIS is the best routine!” or “THIS will give you amazing skin!”. Often times, these articles contain A LOT of steps, most of them very unnecessary.
I once came across an article when I was first starting my skincare journey that contained no less than 15 steps to do daily. Seriously…who has the time or patience for that?

Through many years of trial and error, some working well and others completely destroying my skin, I have come up with a simple routine that is suitable for even the most sensitive skin! (Trust me, I would know…my skin reacts to pretty much everything on the market).

And the best part?
It’s only 4 steps! Technically 3 daily steps, with a 4th step added in 1-2 times a week. But either way! I’ve kept things easy, breezy so even the busiest people can make sure their skin is taken care of. So let’s get to it!

Step 1:

Many articles will say to wash your skin twice daily, once in the morning and once at night. However, this can lead to over washing which will dry out your skin, cause irritation, and lead to further skin damage. Your skin produces protective oils to naturally nourish it. Over washing strips your skin of those natural oils and throws things out of balance. Just like with your hair- over washing leads to frizzy, dry hair and itchy scalp. So, I recommend washing ONCE a day- at night is most important.

This is why…think of everything you do all day. Everything you touch, then touch your face too. If you go to the gym. If you’re chasing kids around and cooking in a hot kitchen. If you wear makeup. Think of everything that touches your face during the day…
gross, right?

So, it only makes sense that before you go to bed, you wash your face (I like to think of it as washing the day off). Wash your face with a soothing, natural face wash that has ingredients you can actually pronounce (if you can’t pronounce it or don’t know what it is…it probably shouldn’t go on your skin). There are many AMAZING natural face washes out on the market. My absolute favorite that I swear by is Dr. Bronner’s Pure Castile Liquid Soap. It’s been around FOREVER and is full of natural, good-for-you ingredients. Plus, this soap can be used for EVERYTHING. Literally…it gives you a list of at least 10 other uses on the bottle, including natural laundry detergent! Since it’s soap in its most pure form, you combine it with water before use to dilute it. Which means that a little goes a LONG way and you definitely get your money’s worth.

PRO TIP: Feel like exfoliating? While I don’t think it’s necessary, it does feel nice to exfoliate every so often. The beauty of this soap is you can simply add some sugar to the wash 1-2 times per week and BOOM, you have your own exfoliating face wash. Like I said- easy, breezy.

I personally like the Lavender or the Unscented, as it’s more soothing to sensitive skin. Plus, if you get unscented, you can add your own essential oils to it and basically create your own face wash! Super fun, and you can mix it up every time you wash. You can find the soap HERE.

Step Two:

This is such an important step, and often overlooked…toner.
Toner is our friend! Toner should NOT be skipped!

Toner works to soothe your skin after washing, reduce redness, tighten your pores (minimizing them so less dirt and bacteria gets in), and feels utterly amazing and refreshing! I recommend Witch Hazel or Rose Water Toner. Both are amazing for sensitive skin, and work as a soothing aftershave that combats irritation and ingrown hairs for men as well. I have created a specialty toner called Rosie that combines the healing power of both Rose Water and Witch Hazel, PLUS Lavender essential oil for even more healing benefits. Step Three:

I can’t say this enough:
Moisturize, moisturize, MOISTURIZE.

Remember we talked about drying out your skin at the beginning of this article? Moisturizing your skin with a natural, non-comodegenic (aka doesn’t clog your pores) oil-based moisturizer promotes the natural oil production of your skin. There are MANY different options depending on the natural oiliness of your skin. For example, I LOVE coconut oil. I use it on everything, for everything- it fixes pretty much everything. However, it could cause naturally oily skin to produce too much oil-leaving your face feeling greasy and clogged up. Some other oils that are more balancing are Grapeseed Oil or Sweet Almond Oil. My favorite is pure, but do include added Vitamin E Oil. Vitamin E Oil is AMAZING for diminishing scars, dark marks, or other uneven skin tones and is still a light enough oil to keep your skin balanced. I love THIS Grapeseed Oil and THIS Sweet Almond Oil. Whichever you use comes down to preference- grapeseed is completely unscented but sweet almond does have a slightly sweet scent.

PRO TIP: Create your own healing serum! Combine your favorite essential oils with your choice of base oil in a little glass jar with a dropper, like THIS one. Make sure you read up on essential oils first to ensure you’re not using an oil that can potentially irritate your skin.

For example- peppermint smells amazing but can cause burning and redness. Lavender has great healing benefits for the skin and is mild for even the most sensitive skin, as is myrrh oil.

You’ll only need 1-2 drops each time you use it, enough for your skin to feel moisturized without feeling greasy. If you accidentally put too much, use a little toner to wipe some off and re-balance your skin. A little will go a long way! See a theme here? Natural products aren’t watered down and filled with unnecessary chemicals, so it lasts much longer. Your skin will be happy, your body will be happy, and your wallet will be happy!

Step Four-ish (Two and a Half?):

This isn’t a necessary step, but I feel it’s important and should definitely be taken care of. Do a detoxifying facial mask! There are PLENTY of detox masks out on the market- but again we’re going to keep it simple and natural. The best option, especially for sensitive skin, is Bentonite Clay. It goes back hundreds of years (rumor has it that Cleopatra used it religiously) and is created from our Mother Earth naturally from volcanic ash. I absolutely love THIS one. To use, combine 2 tablespoons of the clay in a glass bowl with your choice of spring water, Apple Cider Vinegar for extra detoxing powers, or your choice of base oil if your skin has been feeling more on the dry side. It does have a funky, mud smell to it- so I like to add a few drops of essential oils to the mask as well. It not only makes it smell better, but gives you an aromatherapy experience while letting the mask sit for 10-20 minutes AND gives your skin extra love. Combine your ingredients until it’s smooth, and apply to skin AFTER washing (step one).

PRO TIP: Steam your face before applying the mask. This helps to open your pores, allowing the mask to get deep down and pull all the yuck out of your skin. You can do this by filling your sink with hot water, putting your face down close to it, and draping a towel over your head and around you. You’ll get hot very quickly, so you only need to do this for a minute or two. You can also use this clay in your bath or a foot bath for further detoxifying of your body and balancing your immune system.

Apply the mask, kick back and relax for a while, and rinse with lukewarm water. Please note that since this mask is detoxing, it works to pull toxins to the surface and restricts blood vessels momentarily. This results in redness in your skin. The redness diminishes within a half hour or so, but you can speed up the process to a few minutes using the Rosie Toner mentioned in step two. Don’t forget to moisturize!

You’ll be able to see a difference in your skin’s appearance INSTANTLY! While it’s not good to constantly touch your face, it’ll be hard NOT to touch your new, baby smooth skin after using these tips! Continued use will result in beautiful, radiant skin that is healthy and happy!
